Overview
Behind every transformative technology is a team of brilliant scientists and researchers. Academic research in particular is a driving force for technological innovation. Here, we have identified a ‘Midas List’ of researchers who have pioneered highly transformative technologies that have translated to the clinic. Using venture backed startups as a primary guide along with other impact metrics such as patents, citations, and thought leadership, the following professors have demonstrated patient impact, providing significant contributions to the startup ecosystem.
Johns Hopkins University has led all universities in research spending for the last 40+ years. Supported by a world renowned school of medicine, Johns Hopkins boasts a rich history of biological and medical research, leadership, and innovation. With contributions including the accidental discovery of saccharin in 1879 to developing the first treatment for sickle cell anemia in 1995 to pioneering the COVID-19 dashboard in 2020, Johns Hopkins remains a hub for biotechnology research. In 2022, the university was ranked #11 worldwide for issued patents. We would like to highlight ten professors leading life science entrepreneurship efforts at Hopkins, both in innovation and strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem of the school. Please note that this is by no means an exhaustive list and remains dynamic as biotech innovation flourishes at the school.
