Overview
Behind every transformative technology is a team of brilliant scientists and researchers. Academic research in particular is a driving force for technological innovation. Here, we have identified a ‘Midas List’ of researchers who have pioneered highly transformative technologies that have translated to the clinic. Using venture backed startups as a primary guide along with other impact metrics such as patents, citations, and thought leadership, the following professors have demonstrated patient impact, providing significant contributions to the startup ecosystem.
The University of California, San Diego is a well established institution dedicated to academic research - surrounded by a collaborative & close-knit biotechnology ecosystem. Rated as one of the top 15 research universities in the world, UC San Diego’s academic power can be seen through their annual $1.54B in research funding, #5 in NIH funding, production of 2500+ active inventions, 2030+ current US patents, and 16 Nobel laureates. In addition to academic research, San Diego is home to more than 400+ biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, some of which have been founded by former graduate students and postdoctoral trainees of UC San Diego. Many more, including Illumina, Pfizfer, and Life Technologies employ many graduates and trainees. How UC San Diego fits into this booming industry, being rated 4th Nationwide for startup creation, includes: $16.5B+ annual economic impact, 1000+ startup companies launched, $1.2B+ annual research impact, 500+ active license agreements, 100,500+ jobs supported across California. As an example of the amazing work that this university is producing, we would like to highlight ten professors leading life science entrepreneurship efforts at UC San Diego, both in innovation and strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem of the school.
We asked Prashant Mali for comment on how UC San Diego fosters an entrepreneurial environment & what entrepreneurship means to him:
“Our unique ecosystem on the mesa of multiple research institutions, all within a few square miles, provides a remarkable breadth and depth of readily accessible expertise, and that coupled with the highly collaborative environment, makes it very enabling for spurring research and entrepreneurship. I am very fortunate to be able to work here with our talented students and colleagues to progressively move our ideas closer to clinical translation.”
